Back to Istria is a mosaic composed of metal, glass and stone fragments. In Alex Knapic’s words it is as though a huge kaleidoscopic exhibition of his private library were opened and on the spine of each book, each colour would represent your own memories of Istria.
Tenacious and diligent stacking of dynamic verticals of all the colours of Istria, placed on an extremely carefully prepared surface reveals a genuine and personal experience of notion of this restricted territory call forth unlimited reminiscences. A whole history can be detected on the surface: we recognise rust, its colour, texture and almost smell. The artist takes us back to the roots of Istria and in his mosaic works Knapic wanders alone and persistently around his memories in order to create a common remembrance of people. All that is suppressed in the mystifying relationships between the pebbles arranged is a trace of return, a return to Istria.
